Martini at J.Alexander's Restaurant & Bar

I normally don’t order martinis as my drink of choice, but the drink menu at J. Alexander’s looked too good to pass up. The menu listed the prices of the drinks, which I really appreciate, because I feel embarrassed asking how much each drink on the menu costs. There’s nothing worse than having a good drink, then getting the bill and realizing that delicious specialty just cost you $14.

We sat down to dinner, and after seeing the list of specialty martinis at $9 each, I figured I’d go for one since the waiter (very chipper, Patrick) insisted I’d love it. I’m glad he insisted because my Orangy FruFru Martini (not the official name) was not only good, it came with a “sidecar” mini carafe of the excess mixed drink, chilling in its own ice water. For my $9, I got essentially a 2-for-1, and at a place like J. Alexander’s, that’s a great deal.

The menu was overwhelming with good-looking dinner options, and being the seafood lover that I am, I decided to try the Fish Sandwich. Valentine’s Day isn’t just for romantic couples; it’s celebrated with kids as well. Parents deserve a night out with just each other, but the children want to know they are loved in extra special ways for Valentine’s Day. Taking the kids out for a night to dinner to show them how much they are loved of course isn’t romantic, but it can be a way to show your love for them.

So many restaurants that are deemed “family-friendly” aren’t necessarily ones that portray “love,” but with creativity and preparation, parents can create a memorable night for the children. Several national restaurant chains welcome families with healthy children’s menus and a family-friendly atmosphere.

Magic Kingdom Fireworks, Walt Disney World

Some of us don’t have a romantic bone in our bodies, which is why we leave it up to the professionals at the fancy restaurants to romanticize our nights for us. From dinner, drinks, movies, flowers, chocolates, and maybe even an over-nighter at a hotel, Orlando has more than its share of nightspots for showing your sweetie how much you love him (or her).

Overlooking the fireworks at Disney’s Magic Kingdom at the Contemporary Resort’s California Grill is the perfect Valentine’s Day spot for the Disney fanatic. Friday, February 11, through Monday, February 14, the Wishes Nighttime Spectacular fireworks show is scheduled to start at 8:00pm each night, so it is highly suggested that a reservation is set as quickly as possible to insure a table over-looking the magical light display.

Ready for Some Valentine's Day Dessert?

Atlantans! Valentine’s Day is only a month away – do you have your plans squared away yet? How about dessert and drinks? This idea is more budget-friendly, and it’s still possible to completely wow your date (what lady doesn’t love dessert?)

If you live in or around Atlanta, take a peek at the choices below and start planning your special evening. This city has a plethora of choices in this category, but these three are at the top of my list.

1. The Chocolate Bar (Decatur)

The Chocolate Bar in downtown Decatur serves up delectable dessert martinis and a host of amazing cakes and sweets. The signature drink is aptly named The Chocolate Bar, which is heavenly, thought the Tiramisu is amazing as well. Wines and champagnes are offered as well. Split a small or large dessert plate with a loved one and go home full, sugared up and happy! The Chocolate Bar is a very small place, and no reservations are accepted. Get there super early to avoid disappointment.

2. Cafe Intermezzo (Buckhead and Ashford-Dunwoody)

This place happens to be one of the very first places this blogger ate at in Atlanta. Divine desserts and alcoholic coffee drinks that will absolutely knock your socks off. There’s a full menu as well. Prices are a touch on the high side, but the decadence is worth it. Cafe Intermezzo does take reservations, so if you haven’t made them for Valentine’s Day yet, do so soon!

3.  Palate Cafe Wine Bar (Oakhurst)

After 3.5 years in Atlanta, Palate remains one of my absolute favorite places. The chocolate bread pudding melts in your mouth, it’s the best I’ve had anywhere. The dessert drinks are made very well — not too strong with a lot of flavor. There’s an extensive wine list, of course, and take advantage of the appetizer menu. The bruschetta is fabulous!
